Plan raised-bed planting zones before counting plants
A spacing calculation works best after you reserve the parts of a bed used for access, supports or a different crop. Plan each rectangular zone separately.
Count the plantable area, not the frame
A rectangular bed can contain more than one planting decision. You may want to leave a strip for a support, keep an edge clear for access, or use different spacing for two crops. Decide which area is actually available to each group before entering a single length and width into the spacing planner.
The planner draws one centred rectangular grid at a time. It does not know where you will put supports, paths, irrigation or a second crop. Treat those features as boundaries you choose, then calculate the remaining rectangles one by one.
A simple zone example
Take a 96 × 48-inch inside bed. If you reserve a 12-inch-wide strip along one long side for a purpose you have already planned, the remaining rectangle is 96 × 36 inches. With 12 inches between plants, 12 inches between rows and a 6-inch minimum edge, that zone holds 8 positions along its length and 3 rows across: 24 positions.
If you calculated the full 96 × 48-inch bed under the same spacing, it would show 32 positions. The difference is not an error in the tool. It reflects the 12-inch strip you chose to keep out of the planting grid.

Use the final spacing for each zone
Enter the spacing for the plants you intend to keep after thinning, not a temporary seed-sowing distance. If two zones use different final spacing, run the planner for each zone and record the two results separately. The sum is a layout count, not a yield forecast.
For example, a compact planting zone and a wider-spaced planting zone can sit in the same bed, but the grid should not stretch one spacing value to fill both. Keep the dimensions and edge margins visible on a sketch or in the printed plan.
Check the gaps before deciding they are wasted
The planner centres the requested grid, so its actual margins can be larger than the minimum edge margin. That remaining room may be useful for access or air movement, but it is not automatically a planting position. Do not add a plant just because the drawing shows a gap.
If a zone is too narrow after applying two edge margins, the result is zero. Check the zone boundary and the edge margin first. Reducing plant spacing alone cannot make a plant centre fit where the margins already consume all available width.
Write down what the calculation leaves out
Before relying on a position count, note the crop variety, final spacing source, supports, access direction and any non-planting strip. The calculator does not model shade, root competition, succession planting, crop rotation or companion planting. Those choices need information from your seed packet and local growing conditions.
A transparent layout is more useful than the largest possible count. When your plan changes, edit the affected zone and recalculate rather than treating an old total as a fixed recommendation.
