What the tools do
Enter your inside bed dimensions, fill depth, bag size and supplier quotes. The soil planner calculates the total volume, rounds whole bags up and applies the bulk supplier’s order minimum and increment. The spacing planner draws a centred rectangular grid using distances you select.
How we check the numbers
The calculations use geometric volume and unit conversion. Tests cover rectangular and circular beds, multiple quantities, metric conversion, exact bag boundaries, bulk minimums and grid spacing. Worked examples in Garden Notes explain the assumptions. A planting marker is a position, not a prediction of mature size or yield.
Growing information and sources
Supporting notes link to university extension guidance when discussing growing conditions. The tools do not prescribe soil recipes or crop-specific spacing. Use your seed packet, supplier specifications and local growing guidance. Plot & Soil is not affiliated with the linked universities or garden suppliers.
Your inputs stay with you
Calculations run in your browser. If you choose Save on this device, the soil plan stays in that browser’s local storage. It is not uploaded to a public gallery. See the privacy note for hosting and storage details.
How we prepare the planning notes
Each note explains a specific decision: how much empty space to fill, how an order is rounded, how delivery changes a comparison, or how spacing changes a layout. Worked examples state their measurements, units and assumptions so you can reproduce them in the tools. Example prices are illustrative and are not quotes from a supplier.
Numerical examples are checked against the calculations used by the planners. Growing information is linked to university extension guidance, with the date checked shown on the note. Recommendations for an open-bottom bed are kept separate from guidance for a container. The notes do not claim hands-on product trials or measured crop yields.
