How much soil does a 4 × 8 raised bed need?

Compare 6, 8, 10 and 12 inches of fill, then turn cubic feet into whole bags. Use actual inside dimensions for your own bed.

Start with the empty space you will actually fill

A bed advertised as 4 × 8 feet may be measured outside the walls. Measure the interior length and width before buying soil. Use the vertical depth that still needs filling, not automatically the full height of the frame.

For a true 4 × 8-foot inside footprint, the area is 32 square feet. Convert the fill depth from inches to feet before multiplying. A 12-inch fill needs 32 cubic feet. A 6-inch fill needs half as much.

These are geometric examples for an empty, rectangular 4 × 8-foot interior. The bag counts assume 2-cubic-foot bags and no additional allowance. Depths are examples, not recommendations for particular crops.

Already have soil in the bed?

If you only want to top up the surface by 2 inches, calculate that 2-inch layer. The same 4 × 8 footprint needs about 5.333 cubic feet, which rounds up to three 2-cubic-foot bags. Do not subtract existing soil twice: entering only the missing depth already accounts for it.

Irregular ground, roots, rounded corners and internal supports can change the actual space. Divide an unusual footprint into simpler sections and add them, or measure a representative average depth. The result is a buying estimate, not a measurement of a bag’s compacted yield.

Separate your allowance from whole-bag rounding

An allowance is a percentage you choose to add before ordering. It is not a measured settling rate. For the 32-cubic-foot example, a hypothetical 10% allowance makes the purchase target 35.2 cubic feet. With 2-cubic-foot bags, that target requires 18 bags, supplying 36 cubic feet.

The calculator reports the remaining 0.8 cubic feet as material above the purchase target. Compared with the original measured space, you are buying 4 cubic feet extra: 3.2 from the allowance and 0.8 from whole-bag rounding. Do not add the allowance a second time to the bag count.

A metric example for one bed or two

For an inside length of 240 cm, width of 120 cm and added depth of 20 cm, multiply the three dimensions and divide by 1,000 to get 576 litres. Choose Centimetres in the calculator and enter 240, 120 and 20. Set the bag unit to Litres and the bag volume to the size printed on the product.

With 40-litre bags and 0% allowance, one bed needs 15 bags. Two identical beds need 1,152 litres in total, so a shared order needs 29 bags. Rounding each bed separately would buy 30 bags. Combine beds first if you can use a partly opened bag across them; otherwise allow for separate deliveries or storage.

Check the bag label before paying

Use the net volume printed on the bag. A bag marked by weight alone cannot be converted accurately to litres without the product’s bulk density. The planner does not estimate that density.

Check that the product is intended for your type of bed, and confirm the total bag count, pack size and delivery arrangements. Print the plan after entering your final measurements. The printed volume is an estimate of space; it does not guarantee how a particular material will compact or settle.
